“Identity, identity,” we cheer. But who am I? When I first started BBYO in my eighth-grade year, I couldn’t have told you. Today, I can answer confidently. So what changed?

Between my eighth-grade year and now, I’ve discovered who I am, and most of that can be attributed to BBYO. BBYO has truly shaped my life. Through it, I’ve made lifelong friends and memories, traveled the world, and discovered my confidence, values, and Jewish identity. And that’s only the start.

First, it would be criminal if I didn’t mention my growth as a leader through BBYO. I spent one and a half years as a general member when I decided to apply for a chair position. I was my chapter’s Chazonit and absolutely loved it. This inspired me to run for the board, where I then won Mazkirah. That summer, I went on CLTC. My experience at CLTC turned my spark of passion into a flame. I was inspired to take on a greater role, so I applied for the RLN, ILN, and steering committee. This was throughout my sophomore year, when BBYO began to take on a more prevalent role in my life. Now, I’m serving as my chapter’s N’siah for a second time. My time on board has taught me how to communicate with others, speak up, and find my voice. It also showed me how my hard work and passion can translate into something impactful.

Next up is social skills! I started BBYO as a shy and awkward eighth grader. Today, I can have a conversation with almost anyone. BBYO is a huge reason for that. I didn’t go into BBYO with any friends. Instead, I had older girls come up to me, talk to me, and take me under their wing, and that’s a huge part of why I stuck with BBYO. I had people who made an effort to connect with me. From then on, everything changed. I started to enjoy showing up, and I made some of my best friends. Today, I try to be that person for everyone else, and that’s taught me how to form meaningful connections with everyone.

BBYO has shaped my Jewish identity as well. It’s shown me that Judaism is more than a religion, but also a community. BBYO is my way of continuing to “be Jewish” after my bat mitzvah. It’s inspired me to learn more Jewish songs, prayers, and traditions, too. It’s also shown me that I want to find ways to incorporate Judaism throughout my life.

So today, when asked, “Who am I?” I can answer confidently: “ I am a BBG.”

Alyssa Levin is a BBG from Mountain Region, and she is her chapter's N’siah.
