Berlin, Germany
From the DC HQ to Central American convention halls, here’s how the month unfolded:
We kicked things off in the heart of it all: Washington, DC. But this time, not for a DC Council visit, a convention, or a rally—just big thinking and bold ideas. Dan and I joined BBYO’s Strategic Planning Retreat as part of the Steering Committee. For two days, we zoomed out to look at the state of our Movement, celebrate the present, and chart out what the next five years of BBYO could look like. It felt so meaningful to contribute alongside incredible thought partners—and to bring in the voices, stories, and dreams I’ve heard while traveling this year. Bonus: I discovered I have a real talent for axe throwing. Who knew?
From strategy to celebration, I flew down to BBYO Eastern for their Regional Convention, the grand finale of convention season—and what a finale it was! The weather, the people, the hype, the vibes... it had it all. With all Eastern councils coming together in one place, there was magic in the air. Between elevated programming, an awesome J-Serve, and powerful States and Life ceremonies from the regional presidents, it was impossible not to feel the pride everywhere. Huge shoutout to the coordinator team for pulling off something so special! After the convention, I made my way to Charlotte and Charleston for not one but two Froyo with Joyo hangouts with new and current chapter and regional leaders. BBYO + frozen yogurt + dreaming about the future = perfection.
Then came a passport stamp! I crossed the Atlantic to spend a quick but impactful few days in London with BBYO United Kingdom. I was lucky to meet both the outgoing and newly elected executive boards. We swapped stories, compared notes, and dreamed big about elevating recruitment and leadership for the year ahead. It was particularly special to share reflections from my own time as a regional N’siah with teens who are just beginning their own leadership journeys.
I headed home to celebrate Passover with my family and community. Passover is an incredible reminder of how strong our people are and how special it is that we are still as powerful as we were hundreds of years ago. Not only is it my favorite Jewish holiday, but it made me feel incredibly empowered to serve our people.
Back in the U.S., we kicked off Founders Fest in Connecticut Valley Region, where BBG turned 81! What a birthday bash it was. All week long, chapters celebrated in creative ways—from cake-filled programs to summer sneak peeks and storytelling circles. I felt so deeply welcomed and was reminded again how powerful it is to pause and celebrate the legacy we’re all part of.
The celebration kept going in Texas! I spent a whirlwind weekend in Lonestar Region, hopping between San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. We kicked off with a Summer Ice Cream Oneg in San Antonio, followed by a fantastic Pickleball Fundraiser in Austin hosted by Litzor BBG, and a beautiful Life Ceremony by Ranaan BBG. In Houston, I ended the trip with a great dinner surrounded by the regional board and chapter presidents. There’s nothing like Texas-sized BBYO energy and great Whataburger.
Finally, I wrapped up April in a truly unforgettable way: flying to El Salvador! I was honored to celebrate Israel’s 77th Independence Day with the vibrant local Jewish community. We also launched BBYO’s first-ever Central American Convention, bringing together teens from multiple countries for a weekend of leadership, learning, and community-building. In just 48 hours, we packed in two leadership sessions, tons of exploration, and even an induction ceremony into the International Order. Seeing the passion and drive in this region was one of the most inspiring moments of my year.
April reminded me that 80-year-old legacy is everywhere and it needs to be celebrated. Whether it’s DC, Texas, or El Salvador, BBG is alive and well. The hugs, the hand-raises, the late-night talks over frozen yogurt... it all matters. And it all keeps me moving.
Get ready for the grand finale of Joelle's journey soon! Until next month—keep dreaming big, and as always, keep pacing.
Joelle Abaew is a BBG from Germany and is serving as the 80th Anita M. Perlman International N'siah.
