This past year, I’ve been involved in so many amazing BBYO experiences.
Last spring, I ran for my chapter’s Mazkirah for the second time. Even though I didn’t win, the experience taught me a lot about being a leader outside of a board position. At first, I was really upset, but over time I came to understand that everything happens for a reason. I even wrote an article for The Shofar about it, sharing the message that losing is okay and can still lead to growth.
After spending a term off board, I was excited to jump back in. I originally planned to run for Mazkirah again, but at the last minute, I decided to go for S’ganit instead—and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in BBYO. I absolutely loved being S’ganit. I brought a lot of creative program ideas to life, helped my board stay on top of deadlines, and worked hard to support my chapter. It was a lot of work and definitely stressful at times, but I’m so glad I went for it.
Later in the year, I applied for the steering committee for SJR’s regional Spring Thing. Waiting to hear back was nerve-wracking, but I was thrilled when I got the call that I made it! A week later, we started planning. I led a morning energizer, helped run a service, organized a board game program, and led grade-level bonding. It was such a rewarding experience. Not only did I have a blast, but I also got to watch my friends enjoy the programs I helped create.
On top of school, sports, steering, and being on board, I managed to write four articles for The Shofar (and this is number five!). I never imagined I’d enjoy writing so much, but I’ve loved every minute of it. If you have an idea for an article, don’t wait—just go for it!
One of the most exciting things that happened this year was winning a regional award: S’ganit of the Year! I wasn’t expecting it at all, but it felt amazing to be recognized. I put a lot of effort into my role, and receiving that award was the perfect way to end the term. I’m so grateful to my advisors, board, and regional counterparts for supporting me and helping me achieve this.
This year definitely had its ups and downs, but I’ve learned that everything happens for a reason. Just this past weekend, I was reelected as my chapter’s S’ganit, and I can’t wait to see what’s next in my BBYO journey!
