This past November, the Regional S’ganim from across Florida were selected to coordinate Fall Convention as one united state instead of three separate regions. Florida BBYO had tried this model once before in 2023, and the feedback was mixed, which made many people hesitant to try again. However, our Regional Boards encouraged staff to give it another chance. One August afternoon, we received a text letting us know that the S’ganim would be taking on the role of coordinators.

Over the next few months, we met bi-weekly to select a steering team, assign responsibilities, and make sure our programming would exceed expectations. From early on, it was clear that this convention was going to be something special as Early Bird registration sold out in just ten minutes.

Being a coordinator is no easy job. Overseeing a convention of more than 220 people comes with pressure and responsibility. But the most rewarding part was hearing the conversations after the weekend was over. Going into the convention, the Regional S’ganim and I were nervous. We wondered:

Will people enjoy it?
Will Shabbat services go smoothly?
Will the programs and separates be meaningful?

Once opening ceremonies began, we knew this weekend was going to be strong. Shabbat was beautiful and immediately followed by incredible feedback. Programming on Saturday and closing ceremonies exceeded all expectations. On the way home, hearing so many glowing reviews after months of hard work made everything worth it.

One major takeaway from this experience is that if you are ever given the opportunity to coordinate—take it. It is an amazing way to grow as a leader and challenge yourself within BBYO. Even having the chance to steer a convention is powerful. Leaving a weekend knowing that you created meaningful experiences for others is one of the most rewarding feelings you can have.
