Spooey is the international BBG treat, consisting of pretzels dipped in frosting. It has long been a topic of debate what the ultimate combination is. What is the best pretzel for maximum dippage? What is the best frosting for maximum sweetness? What is the right amount of spooey to put on a pretzel?
This debate ends today. We answer your questions here and now, here is the ultimate spooey.
I sent out a poll asking BBYO members on press corps and who follow my Instagram about their opinions on certain aspects of spooey. From this, I have been able to conclude an official best spooey combination down to the brand. Of course, you must read on to find out precisely what it is, as well as view the different poll results.
34 people responded to the poll. I asked respondents which shape of pretzel they preferred for spooey. An overwhelming 82.3% of them said they preferred pretzel sticks; one respondent specified their love for the gluten free pretzel sticks, and one specified they liked the longer version of pretzel sticks. Below is the chart encompassing all results for this question. Respondents also enjoyed original shaped crunchy pretzels (11.8%), flat crunchy pretzels (2.9%), and soft pretzels (2.9%).
I then questioned respondents which pretzel brand they liked best for spooey. Again, an overwhelming percentage prevailed, 79.4% preferring Snyders. Respondents also claimed they liked Rold Gold (14.7%) and Utz(5.9%).
I then had respondents answer which frosting flavor was the best. This question had an incredibly varied answer, the slim majority preferring Funfetti with 41.2%. Others came close with vanilla at 35.3%, chocolate at 14.7%, a crazy color at 5.9%, and 1 respondent(s) said they liked buttercream at 2.9%.
Frosting brands seemed pretty split for the best. This was a three-sided decision between Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines and Pillsbury. The winner, however, was Pillsbury with 50%, Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines coming up short with 38.2% and 11.8% respectively.
The most diversely answered question of the poll asked respondents how much frosting per pretzel was an appropriate ratio. 44.1% said they preferred a big gob of frosting, 32.4% said they preferred only 1 or 2 twirls of frosting, and 11% said they preferred as much as one can possibly take, in other words, multiple gobs. However, those were only the top three. Others said they liked the entire container (2.9%), a big gob but with multiple pretzels at once (2.9%), and an extremely thin coat around the pretzel (2.9%). Please disregard the pink circle and the blacked out piece of the pie chart, I was unable to decipher the meaning of this response.
Finally, after a request almost halfway through the poll responses, I asked the 11 remaining respondents whether they enjoyed sprinkles in their frosting. The result ended in a tie of 34.6% for those who enjoyed sprinkles and those without an opinion. 27.3% were opposed to sprinkles in spooey frosting.
The moment you’ve been waiting for. The ultimate spooey combination. The respondents of the poll have officially determined it to be Snyder’s pretzel sticks with Pillsbury Funfetti frosting, and the appropriate amount of frosting per pretzel is a large gob!
Of course, everyone will always have their own personal spooey preferences, however the aim of this article is to mitigate the relentless debate surrounding this topic!
